In the days before state-funded education, schools were often provided by public-spirited individuals and charitable organisations. Most of Bridgetown’s earliest schools were founded in this way in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
Harrison’s Free School, founded in 1733, opened in the current Exchange Interactive Centre building in 1745, as an initiative by wealthy Bridgetown merchant Thomas Harrison. Our interactive classroom will not only transport you to the year 1745 but will also give you an opportunity to experience their lessons, learn of their recreational activities and discover the history of the school which once called this building home.
