On the 24th of June 2023, the Exchange Interactive Centre hosted its Financial Literacy Fair with the generous contributions of the Barbados Public Workers’ Co-operative Credit Union Limited, Barbados Association of Retired Persons, Barbados Stock Exchange, Starcom Network News, Barbados Museum & Historical Society, the Central Bank of Barbados and others.
Planned for the day, were representatives from various financial institutions in Barbados to conduct workshops at the financial fair on several topics, all aimed at educating the public on financial matters. Scheduled tours of the Exchange Museum gallery floors were also available.
Stationed on the outside of the building were vendors and information booths stocked with their branded merchandise for the attendees to patronize before and after our financial workshops and presentations. The vendors sold a variety of items ranging from local sweets and treats, to jewellery, plants, paintings, and gift baskets.
To start the day off, ‘Money Matters with Melinda’, a Financial Consultant, presented an informative presentation on budgeting and money management. Mrs. Gleneth Clarke, the Branch Operations Officer at Barbados Public Workers’ Co-operative Credit Union Limited, followed with a presentation on how to manage credit wisely. The President of the Barbados Association of Retired Persons (BARP), spoke on the organisation’s role in the pre and post-retirement spaces. The next topic of the day was Mortgage Planning and the process of owning a home. This talk was done by Terra Caribbean, who was represented by real estate agent Ms. Rosey McCartney. The evening concluded with the CEO of the Barbados Stock Exchange, Mr. Marlon Yarde, speaking on financial planning and investing.
These presentations and talks were detailed and well-presented leaving the attendees and staff with valuable information. For years to come. Some patrons even spent the entire day at the Exchange, to take advantage of all the workshops and presentations. Thus far, we have received nothing but positive feedback on the event and presentations. We greatly appreciated our sponsors and everyone who participated and attended our first Financial Literacy Fair, as this could not have been possible without them all.
